FIG Book Club: October Recommended Reading

Welcome to the FIG Book Club!

Welcome to Future Image Group’s Book Club! Every month, we’ll recommend a book, abstract, or research paper related to personal and professional development in the workplace (which, in turn, is also related to the development of social skills and more meaningful personal relationships).  We hope you enjoy – and we’d love to hear your recommendations for books that have helped you or given you some insight on your own journey of professional or personal social development.

Just Stop by Heather D Nelson

Our recommended reading for October 2019 is a book called  Just Stop: 10 Things Everyone Should Stop Saying by Heather D. Nelson. We like this book because it’s a quick read that’s all about improving how we approach relationships with intention and meaning. Though it deals specifically with helping console others who are grieving, the lessons in the book can be applied to all communication and human interaction.

Just Stop: 10 Things Everyone Should Stop Saying confronts a situation that the great majority of ourselves have found ourselves in: Consoling a loved one or friend who is going through a hard time. Most of the time, we fall back on very cliche sayings, instead of thinking through how we can actually help, and what words, if any, will comfort the person. A lot of the time, we say pre-canned phrases that are more for our own benefit, making us feel good that we “tried to help.” Many also obsess over trying to find a solution to the grief, though there may not be one.

Most of the readers of this book will find themselves saying, “Oh, I’ve said that,” and laughing at themselves. Taking a hard look at how we communicate, how much we think before we talk, and how we practice true empathy can help us drastically improve our relationship building skills.
