January 2020 - FIG Book Club Recommended Reading

Welcome to the FIG Book Club!

Welcome to Future Image Group’s Book Club! Every month, we’ll recommend a book, abstract, or research paper related to personal and professional development in the workplace (which, in turn, is also related to the development of social skills and more meaningful personal relationships).  We hope you enjoy – and we’d love to hear your recommendations for books that have helped you or given you some insight on your own journey of professional or personal social development.

Presence by Amy Cuddy

Our recommended reading for January 2020  is a book called Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges  by Harvard Professor Amy Cuddy.

This book is about professional development and learning to shape your presence by using powerful body language, but it’s also centered in emotion, and is easy to connect to and simple to learn from. In this work, Amy Cuddy channels her own experience of overcoming a traumatic brain injury that paralyzed her in social situations, which is a follow-up to her popular TED talk, “Your Body Shapes Who You Are.”

In the book, Cuddy encourages everyone - from those with severe social anxiety to those who just feel nervous energy speaking in front of a crowd - to implement confident body language and watch their world change. In the book, she details how using powerful body language can actually change your body chemistry, and she backs it with scientific evidence. Apply the same concepts to your everyday life - networking events, dates, job interviews - and you’ll be able to transform and overcome your social anxiety.
